JANUARY 2012: WOODY PORTER-ASH
Woody

It’s a brand new year with a whole new field of potential dog of the year candidates.  2012 is an election year so competition is sure to be fierce!  January’s winner and our first candidate for 2012 Dog of the Year is shepherd mix Woody Porter-Ash.

Upon first glance, some of the words you could use to describe Woody are “loner” and “wallflower.”   All of this changes when the tennis balls come out, and woody transforms from sulky miser into a star athlete.  Whether you are playing fetch, tug of war, or keep away, Woody is game.

Much like the mysterious love interest in a Brontë novel, Woody has a dark, brooding nature that many of the girls here at Villa La Paws find alluring.  Some of the lovely ladies who are sure to have Woody’s poster up on their walls are Annie the terrier mix, Kiah the Chow mix, Fergie the lab mix, and Chloe the shepherd.  Unfortunately for them Woody has no interest in romance whatsoever, although this only seems to make them love him all the more.

You can see why this makes Woody a strong contender for 2012 Dog of the Year.  Will he sweep the race?  He can be sure to count on the female vote!

DECEMBER 2011: BIG BEN BENNET

bIGbENsMALLDecember Dog of the month is Ben Bennet, the large white Goldendoodle, aka Big Ben.  We call him Big Ben to distinguish him from all the other Bens, of which there are none.  But should another Ben appear we are fairly confident Ben will retain his moniker, it’s hard to imagine they could be any larger.

Big Ben demands to be played with, and his dog groups are always extra active as a result.  His favorite activity is barking loudly after tennis balls.  If there are no tennis balls around Ben will try to play with the counselors’ hands and feet until they get fed up and get him a ball already.  Ben also loves to wrestle and roll around with his numerous canine friends all day.  Some of Big Ben best buds are Matilda the great dane, Phebe the black lab, Jaeger the chocolate lab, and Ace the golden retriever.

Ben is a dog of many talents.  Before leaving Ben is told to sit and lay down in the front office.  His “goodbye” treat is then placed on his paw, and he is told to “leave it,” and for the most part he does!  We say for the most part because he cheats all the time. “The key is to maintain eye contact” says dad.  Until then, we’ll be sure to keep all eyes on Ben.

NOVEMBER 2011: DIAMOND aka "Little Tank"

diamondOur November dog of the month is... Duh, Da, Da, Duuuh... Diamond Sherrill! The Staffordshire terrier.  Small of body but large of heart (and head) this relative newcomer has already become a staple at Villa La Paws.

Diamond’s friend list is large and constantly growing.  She is especially popular with the fellas, and with that face can you blame them?  This "little tank" never stops playing, so no one feels left out when Diamond is around.  Her closest buddies are Ziggy the Labradoodle, Bandit the blue heeler, and Zelda the lab.

If she looks sad in her pictures don’t be fooled.  She just would much rather be playing than dealing with the paparazzi.  After leaving the building at night Diamond tries to come right back into the entrance gate!  And she is such a popular addition we would let her come right back in a heartbeat.

OCTOBER 2011: PHEBE

phebePhebe Broderick is the second dog to win Dog of the Month at both of our Bell and Shea branches. In fact she was runner up for dog of the year at Bell. Not one to be denied her due, she’s in the running again and this time she won’t quit until she’s reached the top!

Phebe is generally reserved and mellow in group but she has been known to cut loose, prance around, and even chase after the occasional ball. But what she lacks in play buddies she more than makes up for in (not so) secret admirers. Amongst her stalwart suitors are Cooper Buckmaster, Fergie Behrens, and Barley Najafi. Unfortunately for these love-struck hopefuls Phebe only has eyes for the counselors here at Villa La Paws. She whines and barks whenever she sees her favorite counselors and unleashes a constant stream of kisses upon them.

SEPTEMBER 2011: WILLIE AND MARIAH

MariahWillieThis month we are pleased to announce that September 2011 dogs of the month are sibling Portuguese Water Dogs Willie and Mariah Goodman.  It’s been long overdue for this exceptionally easy going and playful pair.

Willie and Mariah are regular customers at Villa La Paws for daycare, boarding and grooming. When they arrive they always come in with smiles on their faces and a bounce in their step.  They have a plethora of friends that includes each other, whoever is nearby, whoever controls the hose, and whoever has a tennis ball.  Willie is exceptionally ball crazy.  If for any reason the counselors find themselves short a ball, the first place they check is Willie’s mouth, and it will be there without fail.

Don’t let Mariah’s diva name and silky long locks fool you, she’s not afraid to get rowdy either.  Willie and Mariah have perfected a tag-team technique where they take turns wrestling and running about with everyone, ensuring that none of their friends go home hyper.  And for this valuable service that we thank them!

AUGUST 2011: SIERRA

sierraEveryone put your hands and paws together for Sierra Rader our Dog of the Month for August 2011! Sierra is a blue Doberman that started coming to Villa La Paws a couple years ago, she is a sweet girl that gets along with anyone. She doesn’t like to wrestle to much but when she gets a burst of energy she will play, Play, PLAY! Her favorite thing to do is play ball, she doesn’t catch the ball often but she sure loves to chase it. A few of her friends are Bella a Basenji mix, Annie a Springer, and Rizzo a Beagle.

When she isn’t running after the ball or playing with her friends, Sierra likes to spend some time with her Counselors. Hugs, kisses and pats on the head is what she really likes, and if you have extra treats that you need to get rid of she will gladly take them of your hand with out a fight. She is full of love and shares it with everyone that she meets.

JULY 2011: PEPPER AND MAGGIE

Picture_331Our dog/s of the month for July are EXTRA special. These two are the first, EVER, to be named Dog of the Month at BOTH our Bell and now Shea location… and it is well deserved! Congratulations to Pepper and Maggie (R.I.P). These girls have been coming to PAWS since the very beginning. They are loved by all the staff of Villa La PAWS. Our lead groomer, Jayne, described Maggie’s eyes as “heart melting”. “I’ve known the girls since I first started at PAWS” Jayne says “We all miss Maggie very much”. Everyone here has so many great things to say about the girls but the comment that comes up the most is, “Pepper’s like my right-hand girl... She’s always right next to me... She has to be touching me at all times!” Arisa, our groomer (also previous counselor at Bell) misses Maggie’s “grown of a howl” when you’d rub her in just the right spot. Everyone knew what Maggie’s favorite part of the day was… checking out! And why was that? Well she got a treat, OF COURSE! When asked to say a little something about the girls Larry, our bather, says “drool” “shed” and “a-whoo whoo”. “Despite Maggie ‘relieving’ herself each time in the PAWS limo… I loved her very much” says Larry, “And Pepper, she’s just the perfect dog. She gets along with everyone.” It’s no question as to why these girls wouldn’t be named Dog of the Month, we love you girls!
JUNE 2011: BENNY
Benny_Hinjosa_002We are very pleased that Benny has made his way to the wall as Our June 2011 Dog of the Month! Benny is a 6yr old Yorkie that has a big heart with an equally matching personality. But that’s not all he has… his groomers say he has the biggest, brownest eyes they have ever seen and when he looks at you with those big, brown eyes it’ll melt your heart. He might not be the biggest player here at Villa La paws but he is the world’s biggest snuggle bug! He loves to just sit on our laps to be pet and watch as his fellow schoolmates play. Benny also loves his end of the day treats. He sits very politely as he waits for us to break his cookie in “Benny” size bites.
MAY 2011: FERGIE

2011-05-31Fergie-SheaDOM-SmallEveryone give a hand to Fergie Behrens our May 2011 Dog of the Month! Fergie is a 6yr old Lab Mix that has been coming to Daycare since ‘It’s a Ruff Life’. She brings a tremendous amount of fun when she enters the gates. Fergie loves to bounce, pounce, jump, and run after every ball and toy! She also loves to get in on water play, she ‘dives’ into the pool, and chases and snaps at the water coming from the hose.

Fergie has many friends that she loves to play and wrestle with which include Talli a black lab, Patina a yellow lab, Yogi a Vizsla, and many more. When she is not playing with her friends she loves to cuddle up next to her counselors and be hugged and petted. She is a great girl that always brings a smile to your face and warms your heart!

APRIL 2011: BRUISER

Bruiser_Shiya_003Congratulations to Bruiser Our April 2011 Dog of the Month! Bruiser is an adorable 1 ½ year old brindle Dachshund that has been coming to daycare for just about a year now, as well as graduating from The Paws Training Academy.

This little guy has a big heart and loves all his counselors and friends. He is always happy, playful and absolutely loves to play ball, he’d go all day long! Bruiser is one of the few pups that will actually bring us the ball back, which is helpful in playing fetch. He loves to give the counselors kisses and hugs. He has play pals of all sizes including Happy a Chihuahua mix, Kato a Lhasa-poo, and Colt a Giant Schnoodle.

He has a certain charm and a positive attitude that he always carries with him. We love you Bruiser!

MARCH 2011: SAGE

4-4-11_004Sage, a little black Pomeranian, has made her way to the wall as our March 2011 Dog of the Month on Shea!! Sage is a sweet spunky little girl with a great big personality. Don’t let her small stature fool you, she will make her presence known in a room full of dogs! She sure loves to rough house with anyone that comes her way but will also let the big guys know if they cross her ‘play’ boundaries.

Sage is as cute as a button and she definitely knows it! She uses it to her advantage to get extra cookies or cuddle time with the counselors. If looks aren’t enough she also has her own little dance that really gets everyone to pay attention to her! She rarely takes “no” for an answer and the dance makes her super hard to resist. Sage wins the hearts of everyone she meets.

It isn’t all cuteness in that little package, she has brains as well as beauty! Sage has graduated from Villa La Paws Training Academy! She graduated with honors of course!! This gorgeous girl has it all!

FEBRUARY 2011: COLT

FEB_dom_COLT_005We are pleased to announce that our hairy boy Colt is the February 2011 Shea Dog of the Month!! He is the most adorable Giant Schnoodle that the paws staff has ever seen! Colt is a 9 month old strapping young dog who has been coming to Villa La Paws since he was ‘tiny’ and we’ve watched him grow… and grow… and grow into a ‘giant’ young dog. Colt brings a tremendous amount of fun to the yards every time he comes thru the gate.

This full of life pup has many interests. He loves to play in the water, play ball, dig in the sand pit but I think his most favorite thing to do is wrestle with his many friends. No matter what day of the week he comes, he will always find someone to play with. A couple of his include Chelsea an Irish Doodle, Kiah a Chow X, Calvin a Lab, and just about anyone that is just as playful as he is. There is no time for napping with Colt around!

In addition to romping with his friends at daycare his Mom also has him enrolled in obedience classes. His Mom wants him to “Be All He Can Be”. Also as an after school activity he does agility. He’s an agile athlete on the agility field! Make sure you watch for him on the Olympics of dog agility in the near future.

JANUARY 2011: DOC

DocDoc Day is a rambunctious, happy go lucky 3 year old black lab mix has been coming to daycare since 2008. You can’t help but smile when you see this bouncy pup run up to the gate.

Doc loves to play ball all day long. He will chase the ball from one end of the playroom to the other; even if he doesn’t catch it, he is just happy to run around with his friends. Doc also loves to play in the water in the summer time. He jumps and runs for the water at lighting speed in hopes to catch every single drop. Doc has made a number of friends here at daycare. He loves to run and wrestle with Macy the Goldendoodle, Archie the shepherd mix, Talli the black lab, Fergie the shepherd mix, and almost anyone that plays ball or romps in the water with him.

As well as being one of our hardest players, Doc is also one of the groomer’s easiest dogs to groom. He jumps right into the tub to get shampooed and right onto the table to be dried and get his nails clipped.

DECEMBER 2010: GIGI

GigiGigi is a beautiful 3 yr old brown and white Pit Bull who has graced us with her presence in both daycare and grooming since 2008. She is one of the sweetest dogs that has ever visited PAWS on Shea.

Gigi always comes in with a big smile on her face and a wiggle in her butt. Unlike most dogs that come to daycare, she doesn’t chase tennis balls, romp and splash in the pools, play tug-o-war or play with the big plastic ball. What she love, love, loves to do is play with the bubbles! She loves to jump around, chase them through the air and eat them. We know when she’s had enough bubble chasing when bubbles start coming out of her ears!

Gigi has such a gentle and low key nature that it attracts a variety of friends. She plays with Izzy (another Pit Bull mix), Rosie (a yellow Lab mix) and Bo (a Golden). She even has good friends in our “little kid” group, especially Happy (a Doxie mix) and Chiquita (a Chihuahua mix).

By the way, Gigi loves the whole PAWS staff just as much as we love her!

NOVEMBER 2010: BELLA

Bella1110Bella (aka “Bella Bella”) is three year old red brindle, Basenji Mix. Our favorite physical trait of hers is her ears; one is always standing straight up and the other is always flopped down to the side. Add that to her big brown eyes and her wide-mouthed smile! Along with her admiring looks, she also has the sweetest personality. She has this look of innocence that you can’t resist going over to her and kissing her nose while giving her a belly rub.

Now, don’t let her sweet and innocent looks fool you. Bella will, without a wag from her tail, get down and dirty in a split second! She loves to run around the entire yard, flinging dirt into the air, leaving the other dogs in a dust cloud, wait for the dust to clear, and do it all over again. This girl loves to play! She is confident in all aspects with any dog, whether it’s getting down on the ground to wrestle, or chasing her friends in the yard. The only time she is ever submissive and giddy is when she sees Boost, a Border Collie and Staffordshire mix. Bella will lie down on the ground below his feet and lick his face. When you see her with him, you just know that there is no one else for her!

OCTOBER 2010: SPOCK

Spock1010Spock the Malamute was rescued by his mom at 1½ years of age when she found him at the Honolulu pound; he was about to be put down because he was extremely ill. After she nursed him back to health, they lived in Hawaii for over six years until a few months ago when they moved to Phoenix. We get the pleasure of seeing Spock everyday due to his mom’s very busy work schedule.

Spock is one of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet. He’s in heaven when there are people around. He likes to follow the counselors around and when they stop, he’ll stick his nose their legs and just stand there. When he gets really excited, he begins to howl. His ears either stand straight up or lay down, he squints his eyes, he puts his lips together, and lets out a soft and then gradual louder howl. It’s one of those kinds of howls you hear at night if you’re in the mountains. Sometimes he’ll get the whole daycare group going and everyone joins in to howl. Even though Spock loves to be around people, he doesn’t mind hanging out with his canine buddies. He likes to sit with them and just relax. Some of his relaxing buddies are sisters Maggie the Bloodhound and Pepper the Shar Pei mix, and Max the Malinois.

SEPTEMBER 2010: MAX

MaxWe have known Max the Belgian Malinois’ handsome face since he first stepped “paw” into daycare in 2004. Since then, we have had the pleasure of watching him grow up from a one-year-old, hyper, crazy, young dog to a wise and mature adult.

Max is a big time flirt with all the ladies in daycare. He likes to give them the “look”, then dance back and forth to each side of them, swaying his body in hopes of impressing them with his smooth moves. Akasha, a Hybrid Mix, is his number one gal pal. Every time they see each other, excitement ripples through their bodies and they get all giddy, racing over to see one another. On the days, that Akasha isn’t here, Max loves to wrestle with his friends Kiah the Aussie Mix, and Matilda the Great Dane.

Max isn’t much of a ball player, but loves a good game of throw and fetch between the counselor and other dogs. He also likes to hang out around the counselor in his group, probably because he knows he’ll always receive a back scratch or belly-rub… and after all, who doesn’t like a good back scratch now and then?

AUGUST 2010: MANNEY, TOFFEE & JACK YOUNG

domyoung810sThis trio is a sight for sore eyes. Manney is a handsome, reddish-rusty, nine year old Golden, who absolutely adores his siblings. His younger sister, Toffee, is a gorgeous, seven year old three-legged Siberian Husky with enough feistiness for the three of them but a sweet and nurturing side to her too. Jack, a little black and gray Terrier mix, who we think is between six and eight years old, just joined the gang a few months ago when his mom rescued him off the streets. It was love at first sight when he became apart of their family, like he had always been with them. He looks up to his big brother, and is usually never out of eye sight of him.

We get the pleasure of seeing them two times a week. Out of the three, Toffee is the player. She loves chasing the tennis ball with her girlfriends, Bella and Lucy Puppy. When no one else is in the pool, she loves to lie in the water by herself to cool off. Manney and Jack like to mingle through the group of dogs, sniffing and greeting everyone, before finding a comfortable spot to lie down and rest. One of their favorite spots to lie down, especially during the summer, is on the cool, wet, concrete underneath one of the misters. Although they have many friends to play and hang out with, they love to play with each other. Manney and Toffee are very vocal with each other. It’s entertaining to watch them, because it’s like they’re yelling at each other, like human siblings do but it’s all in good fun and they’re goofing around. They love to wrestle too, rolling around on the ground, beating each other up. They’re great dogs, and the bond between the three of them is so loving and caring, you can’t help but smile when you see them together.

JULY 2010: MATILDA

MatildaThis miniature pony of a dog is a two year old black-with-some-white Great Dane. She started here at PAWS as a gangly, all legs puppy who loved to run and jump around. She definitely never out grew her puppy stage because she still runs and jumps around, now with much more energy and excitement! She plays with tennis balls, kongs, rope toys, and she absolutely loves the water. She will sit in the baby pool and relax in the sun and then five minutes later she will get up to bite at the water coming out of the hose. She is a fair player and will allow any one who can keep up with her to play, big or small. Since she is so big, when she wants to sit down to rest, she will sit her butt down on the bench with her back legs stretched out forward in the air, balancing herself with her front legs on the floor. It’s adorable to look at! She also thinks she is a lap dog. If a five pound Chihuahua can climb up on your lap to sit, how come a 150 pound Great Dane can’t?

If Matilda was a girl in high school, she would be one of the popular girls who is nice to everyone including the lower class and the not-so-popular kids. One of her best friends at PAWS is a big white Goldendoodle named Ben. Others include Nfinity the Collie, Yogi the Viszla, and Chucks the Boston Terrier.

JUNE 2010: TALLI

TalliTalli a.k.a. “Talli Ho” is a four year old black lab who has been a faithful daycare comer since 2006. This girl lives for her tennis balls and water play! All you have to have is a tennis ball and an arm that never tires of constantly throwing it for her. She races for it and brings it right back putting it at your feet and she would do that from sun-up to sun-down 365 days a year if you let her. Remember in the movie “Up” when the dogs say, “Squirrel!” and they all lose complete attention at what they were doing to look for the squirrel? That’s what Talli does when she sees a ball. Now take her ball obsession and times it by a thousand for her water play and that would be her obsession for water. She could spend hours digging at the bottom of our baby pool and eating the water. She also makes this high pitched barking sound letting us know she’s having a grand ‘ol time!

Talli’s BFF in the whole wide world is Patina, a five year old yellow lab. These two have been inseparable for years, having created a very special bond. They play together, wrestle with each other, nap together, pretty much do everything together. Each of their moms knows whether the other one wasn’t at daycare because of how not tired they are. Talli of course has other friends too. She plays with Cooper the Pugador, Big Ben the Goldendoodle and Hippie Chic the Lab.

All in all, Talli is a well rounded happy girl who’s out to have a good time.

MAY 2010: PIPER & CODY C

Piper and CodyThese two siblings are like two peas in a pod, always together following one another wherever the other one goes. Piper is a five year old black and white Tibetan Terrier mix with a smile that lights up a room. All you have to do is ask her to smile and she’ll look up at you, curl up her top lip and her pearly whites sparkle out. Cody is a jet black eleven year old Chow mix who loves attention! He could spend all day sitting next to someone as long as he’s getting a full body rubdown.

Piper and Cody have been coming to daycare and grooming for six years. They come every Friday and every Friday is the same routine. Dad will drop them off bright and early in the morning, they’ll hang out with their friends until the afternoon, then they happily go into grooming for either a brush out or a bath, and they end their day with their favorite dog treat, a smile and a butt rub!

Even though Piper and Cody aren’t the biggest of players, they have many friends that they hang out with. Ally and Myia the American Eskimos, Moby and Rupert the Schnauzers, and Manney the Golden and Toffee the Siberian Husky are their closest friends. Piper and Cody are a perfect example of how brothers and sisters should act, whether you’re human or canine. They take care of each other, have each other’s back and love one another.

APRIL 2010: OLIVER W.

Oliver W.Oliver is a one and half year old black with brindle pit mix who has been coming to PAWS since last year. He has endured some rough times in his short life, but has made a major turn a round and is now loving life. He was rescued from a hoarder and coming from that environment, he was extremely unsocialized around people, wouldn’t go through any open doors, had never been inside a house etc etc. He was rescued by Cooper’s Chance Rescue and has been living with his foster mom since then. She started bringing him to daycare to socialize him and after a couple weeks he was pulling to get into daycare!

Any dog would love to have Oliver in their daycare group! He’s a great player and loves to run around wrestling with his friends. Some of his many friends include Archie the Shepherd Mix, Comet the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Payton the Lab Mix, and Paige the Golden. Another one of his favorite activities to do during the day is splashing around in the pool. Oliver is a sweet and loving boy and anyone would be lucky to have him as their dog.

MARCH 2010: JOEY S.

Joey (a.k.a “Jo Jo”) is one of the most lovable, sweet, nurturing, and fun to be around Cocker Spaniels you’ll ever meet. This handsome fellow was actually named after the famous Joey Tribiani from the T.V. show “Friends”. Joey absolutely loves coming to daycare, it’s all Wendi can do to keep him still long enough to change him into his daycare collar before he races into meet his friends. Once he’s through the gate there’s no stopping him from running around the entire yard getting everyone including the counselors into a hyped up ready to play, play, play mood! As his ears fly in the wind, his lips pulled back and a happy go lucky grin on his face, he zooms from one end to the other.

Joey gets along with anyone and everyone. Some of his friends include Chill the Chihuahua, Rupert the Schnauzer, and his crush Miya the American Eskimo and that’s only a few of his many companions. His bubbly personality makes him hard to resist.

FEBRUARY 2010: ALLY & MIYA M.

Ally is a ten year old American Eskimo and Myia is a seven year old American Eskimo. Both have been coming to daycare and grooming since it was a Ruff Life back in 2005. These two sisters could be considered the Paws Princesses. Everyone is always “ooohing” and “awwing” when they see them, commenting on how beautiful their snow white fur is and how they prance around with such poise and grace. They have bright brown eyes and cute little button noses. They’re definitely a sight for sore eyes but don’t let their beauty fool you, they will roll around in the dirt just as much as the next dog.

Out of the two, Ally is the more outspoken. She always speaks her opinion whether it’s about a dog coming into daycare or someone passing by the fence, she’s usually the first one to say something. Ally is more likely to be found basking in the sun by herself or sitting in a counselors lap. She has that sassy, "I can do anything and nobody can tell me what to do" attitude and her boyfriends, Chill the Chihuahua and Ogilby the Labradoodle find that very appealing.

Myia on the other hand, has a softer, quieter nature but loves to play! She goes along with the crowd and is happy to do whatever her friends are doing. Rumor has it that Joey the Cocker Spaniel has an eye for her and may be asking her out soon, so we’ll have to wait and see.

JANUARY 2010: HAROLD Z.

Harold is a 13 year old sophisticated and admirable cocker spaniel who has been coming to daycare and grooming since 2003, back when it was a Ruff Life. Ever since the Dog of the Month came to fruition, Harold has been campaigning for this role every month for the past three years. Perseverance, a lot of hard work, and endless nights at Starbucks making buttons, signs, and t-shirts has finally paid off for Harold and his manager, who happens to be his mother and of course his biggest fan. Harold is a great role model for any dog, new or old, who comes into daycare. Making friends with everyone, he shows them how to wait patiently going in and out of doors, how to share toys, and the utmost important how to finagle extra biscuits out of the counselors.

Like any other candidate for any type of election, Harold has to be on top of his game at all times. Every Thursday his limo picks him up and brings him to “work” and after a long hard day, he then goes to the salon to relax and be pampered by his own personal groomer. And boy does he get the works. She does his nails, combs his hair, gives him a massage, and even brushes his teeth! But it’s worth it when you’re running for such an important role, especially being in the spotlight all the time. Along with being a great role model for his peers, he is also a loving and caring big brother for his two feline sisters, Miss Kitty and Sassy, who look up to him with great respect and one day hope to follow in his paw-prints.
DECEMBER 2009: ZEPHYR BLAU
ZephyrDOM1209 Please give Zephyr Blau a BIG congratulations for making it to our wall of fame! This big, goofy 7 year old yellow lab had a hard life as a young dog and as luck would have it he ended up in rescue and found his way into his Dad Rich’s life. We do believe it was love at first sight when these two souls found each other. As the old saying goes “Zephyr thought he had died and gone to heaven” the moment he entered Rich’s home. Zephyr gets the best of everything and is always by his Dad’s side. He gets to go out for coffee at Starbucks everyday and gets to go to In N Out Burger for a special treat. He has long forgotten his past in that backyard. These days he only has eyes for his Dad.

As for his life at Villa la Paws, it’s been a bumpy one. He’s had his moments in time out for inappropriate daycare conduct (we like to keep it G rated at Villa la Paws) but even though Zephyr, at times, needs some redirection of his energies, he’s always been a counselor favorite. We do notice on the mornings that he has his whipped cream treat from his Starbucks girlfriend that he comes in on sort of a sugar high so we think maybe Dad needs to limit Zephyr’s whipped cream on daycare mornings!

So Dad, you don’t need to remind Zephyr to be a good boy and not get expelled anymore, Zephyr isn’t going anywhere! But if you could still remind him to use his inside voice….that would be great!

NOVEMBER 2009: LUCY PUPPY
lucypuppy

Everybody give a big WOO HOO to Villa La PAWS on Shea's November 2009 Dog of the Month, none other than Lucy Puppy!

Lucy Puppy is a very smart, energetic, almost three year old cattle dog mix who has been racing around our yards since she was a youngster. One might wonder why an almost three year old dog is still referred to as a puppy? Well because Lucy is what we call a perpetual puppy! As soon as Lucy enters the gate in the morning, you know she’s going to get the party started! And when we say “party”, we mean the “ball playing party”. When you look into those intense brown eyes you can just hear her saying “Throw the ball, throw the ball, oh please just throw the ball!”. And so we do… over and over and over! She has been “training” the counselors since she was a baby and she has trained them quite well!

In her free time Lucy and her Mom like to run agility and in true Lucy style, she races around there too! It’s definitely something to see!

OCTOBER 2009: MURPHY
murphy1009s

Murphy’s not just about the glitz and glamour, though. He’s a staunch supporter of community service, and donates his time as a therapy dog. There are few things that a cuddle from Poppa Smurf won’t set right. He even tries to set a good example for the other dogs at daycare, along with buddies Romeo, Chill and Mimosa, the latter two having been awarded the prestigious DoM award in the past.

SEPTEMBER 2009: MIMOSA
mimosa09b

Raise your glasses in a toast to the Paws on Shea's September 2009 Dog of the Month, Mimosa! This bubbly little Maltipoo is utterly charming, and has many counselors as well as fellow daycare-goers wrapped around her little paw. Mimosa is a shamelss flirt; her top three boyfriends are fellow Maltipoo Murphy, the aptly named Shih tzu Romeo, and cool Chihuahua Chill. When Mimosa isn't driving the boys crazy, she can usually be found camped out on a counselor's lap. But don't think that she's just some idle lap-dog. Mimosa can chase a tennis ball with the best of them. Of course, she could use some work on the retrieving aspect of that particluar game, but that's neither here nor there.

Mimosa isn't just some one trick pony either (so to speak). She's got a veritable bag of tricks, the extent of which we have yet to see. Like what, you may ask? Well, let's put it this way: she doesn't drive herself to school... yet. Mimosa is one little girl that should not be underestimated. After all, big things come in small packages!

AUGUST 2009: CHARLIE B
charlieb809

Remember that old movie, The Shaggy Dog? The one that had the guy trapped in the body of a dog, so although he looked like a dog, he still thought, comprehended and reacted like a human? Well, that's Charlie! Now, there is a difference between a dog that’s too stuck up to associate with other dogs, and a dog that thinks of himself more as a person. Charlie definitely falls into the latter category. There is nothing haughty or pretentious in his manner. He’s great with the other dogs, very polite and receptive, everybody’s buddy. He even has a girlfriend, the lovely Storey, herself a former Dog of the Month. It’s just that when he comes into group, he goes around and gets acquainted not like a dog going into group, but a counselor. And, true to form, he spends a majority of his in-group time hanging out with the counselors, helping them keep an eye on the group. Hat's off to Charlie... dog and assistant counselor of the month!

JULY 2009: JAKE
Jake: Shea Dog of the Month 7/09

Jake is a 1 ½ year old English Bulldog who has been wiggling his butt up to the PAWS check-in gate for about three months now. He’s the epitome of what you'd expect a Bulldog to be: confident, fun, happy, over the top at times and overall just a fun guy to have around.

His many buddies at daycare include Golden girl Paige. Okay, with his short stubby little legs, Jake can’t quite keep up with her but he sits and waits for her to run wildly past so he can tackle her down to chew on her legs.

When Jake’s had enough romping with his friends, he takes a soak in the pool and lays froggy style on the cool pavement resting and waiting for the next burst of energy.

JUNE 2009: KACEY
Kacey, June 2009 Dog of the Month

Don’t let Kacey’s imposing stature fool you – Kacey is truly a gentle giant. Though still a few months shy of his 2nd birthday, he already dwarfs almost any other Airedale terrier! In spite of this, he’s a very mild-mannered guy. Kacey occasionally engages in a little water play, or have a ball trying to catch a ball. The operative word in this instance is “try”. Kacey is an expert at “almost had it”, a master of the near-miss, the originator of “oh, so close”.

Kacey also has somewhat of a distinctive gait… or rather, prance. He picks his paws up unnecessarily high and seems to trot around like a pony. Maybe he’s practicing for a career in equestrian sports? The fun continues when he picks up speed and really starts to move, bounding around in a way that almost defies description. Suffice to say that once you see it, the thought of Kacey loping and tromping will never fail to bring a smile to your face.

MAY 2009: BAXTER
Baxter, May 2009 Dog of the Month This handsome, almost-3-year-old boxer is one of the most complimented kids on our daycare roster. His striking mug was even featured in an article about the Paws in the AZ Republic and on AZCentral.com! Guests and visitors often inquire, “Who is that beautiful dog?” That’s our Baxter B!

Baxter is also one of our most enthusiastic ball-players (although not necessarily one of the best!). His eye-mouth coordination could use a little work. But hey, who cares, so long as he’s having fun! And speaking of fun, Baxter has one of the most hysterically funny displays of excitement we’ve ever seen. Dubbed “the Boot-Scoot Boogie” by Wendi, Baxter will race around the yard with his butt tucked ridiculously low, to his boots, you might say. In short, he bounds around while sitting!

APRIL 2009: BABY BO
Bo, April 2009 Dog of the Month

Also known as “Baby Bo”, this golden child has been a daycare regular since he was but a wee pup.

Although he’s grown since those days, he’s just as cute and playful as he was back then – more so, in fact.

Bo is great in group because he’ll play with anybody, so long as they can keep up with him.

Bo is not just wonderful with the other dogs – he makes each and everyone of us here at the PAWS feel like a million bucks when he says hello. His face splits into an ear-to-ear grin, his tail wags so hard his entire body shakes and he just generally acts like he hasn’t seen you in years. It is flat-out impossible to walk away from a Baby Bo greeting without a smile of your own.

MARCH 2009: DOZER & PEARL

Dozer - March Dog of the Month

Dozer is a red and white Pit Bull Terrier who just turned a year old in January. Pearl is a white and red Pit Bull Terrier who we are guessing is about 1 ½ - 2 years old.

Both of these dogs came from rescue. In fact, Pearl is actually a foster still looking for her forever home. Dozer fortunately has found his “place” and won’t be going anywhere else! Dozer has been coming to PAWS for about six months now and Pearl has joined him in just the past two months.pearl309lg

They both LOVE coming to PAWS to see their friends and, of course, play ball as much as possible. They don’t like water play but there are lots of other things that they love to do! They sometimes bring their other brother Heinz, a rescue Shar Pei X, so he can join in the fun too! Unlike Pearl and Dozer, he loves to play in the water. All of the Murphy kids will play with anyone who can keep up with them. They have all been a welcome addition to our PAWS family!

FEBRUARY 2009: STOREY SCHEIN

Storey - February Dog of the Month

Storey is a beautiful two year old Australian Shepherd. She has been a very welcomed addition to the PAWS roster.

She is super cooperative and loves to play or just hang-out with all her dog and human friends. Don’t let her beautiful appearance fool you; she acts much like a tomboy. She can get rough and tumble with all the kids… big and small.

Storey is so well liked she gets invited to all the birthday parties! We think deep down Storey loves to wear the sparkly hats….she thinks she looks beautiful (wink, wink)! We, as counselors, like it when SOMEBODY wears the stinking hats! Amber says she looks like “a princess with her sparkly hat, in a far away land waiting for her Prince to carry her away”.

JANUARY 2009: HIPPIE CHIC BLOOM
hippiechic109lg

Hippie Chic is an adorable yellow lab with a really cute pink eraser nose. She is almost 6 years old now but she doesn’t look or act a day over 6 months! She has been coming to PAWS for just over a year now and without a doubt she is the life of the party! What would we ever do without Hippie Chic on our daycare roster? She loves to cause a “puppy explosion” when she enters the gate in the morning. She can hardly wait to get her collar off and our collar on before we throw open the gate for her to run wildly and skidding to the next yard where all the dogs are. This is where said explosion occurs. Everybody is always excited to see Hippie Chic. She has many, many boyfriends always buzzing around her waiting their turn for a romp with Hippie. If Hippie were a person her social calendar would be full. She’d have a date every night! Hippie brings a tremendous amount of exuberance and friendliness to PAWS.
